History
The lab was built and commissioned in 1991 and was designed to handle large test items such as switchboards and Industrial Switchgear.
Wilson transformers were given the task to produce a short circuit transformer to handle the stresses of up to 80,000A. The transformer is connected to 66000V in a purpose built switch yard. The power is taken from two parts of the grid to prevent the local lights from dimming when tests are being conducted.
ITACS purchased the laboratory in July 2004 and has since added 20kA at 1320V for the mining industry requirements. New test and materials handling equipment have been added with great plans for future expansion.

LV Switchboard testing
ITACS High Power test station was designed specifically for testing switch boards and associated switchgear products. ITACS High Power can test your switchboard for:
- Electrcial withstand tests ICW up to 80 kA
- Making and breaking Ics and Icu to 65 kA @ 415 V
- Temperature rise up to 10,000 A
- Dielectric testing up to 5k V
- Dielectric impulse testing up to 20 kV
- Arc fault containment, limited and unlimited.
- Creapage and clearance.
- IP testing including water and dust.

- Test required
- Description of the test item (we can accept Autocad drawings, PDF or faxed copies)
- Electrical ratings such as Voltage, Current, Frequency, Short circuit making and breaking rating, withstand time, conditional or unconditional arc fault etc.
- Type of report required, such as NATA, Non NATA, results only, no report.
- When you wish to test and the urgency of the report.
- Please note it is preferable that the test item if large be deliverd on an open deck truck plus not be heavier than 3 tons. (heavy items require the hire of another crane)
- It is preferable that the customer supply the bolted links.

LV Switch gear and control gear testing
We have experience testing, air circuit breaker (ACBs) Moulded case circuit breakers (MCCB), miniture circuit breakers (MCB’s) Residual current circuit breakers (RCBO’s) residual current devices (RCD’s), fuse switches, fuse disconnector, High voltage equipment for withstand testing etc.
As this category for testing is very complicated we suggest you contact our engineers to assist with advice such as series tests, number of samples, testing standards etc.
High current Withstand and short circuit testing
ITACS has conducted numerous withstand tests on switchboards, earth sets, high voltage reclosers, resister banks, CT’s, ACB’s, etc. We have also conducted development testing at ambient, very low and elevated temperatures. Please indicate what standard to wish to test to and the test sequence. An ITACS engineer will contact you for further detail.
